Relentless and complex transits from a planetesimal debris disc

چکیده

ABSTRACT This article reports quasi-continuous transiting events towards WD 1054–226 at d = 36.2 pc and V 16.0 mag, based on simultaneous, high-cadence, multiwavelength imaging photometry using ULTRACAM over 18 nights from 2019 to 2020 March. The predominant period is 25.02 h corresponds a circular orbit with blackbody Teq 323 K, where planetary surface can nominally support liquid water. light curves reveal remarkable night-to-night similarity, changes longer time-scales, lack any transit-free segments of unocculted starlight. most pronounced dimming components occur every 23.1 min – exactly the 65th harmonic fundamental depths up several per cent, no evident colour dependence. Myriad additional harmonics are present, as well least two features independent periods. High-resolution optical spectra consistent stable, photospheric absorption by multiple, refractory metal species, indication circumstellar gas. Spitzer observations demonstrate detectable dust emission, suggesting that otherwise hidden disc orbiting may be typical polluted white dwarfs, detected only via favourable geometry. Future required constrain orbital eccentricity, but even if periastron near Roche limit, sublimation cannot drive mass loss in parent bodies, collisional disintegration necessary for production.

Collisional processes in extrasolar planetesimal discs – dust clumps in Fomalhaut’s debris disc

This paper presents a model for the outcome of collisions between planetesimals in a debris disc, and assesses the impact of collisional processes on the structure and size distribution of the disc. The model is presented by its application to Fomalhaut’s collisionally replenished dust disc; a recent 450-μm image of this disc shows a clump embedded within it with a flux ∼5 per cent of the total...

The Vega debris disc: A view from Herschel*

We present five band imaging of the Vega debris disc obtained using the Herschel Space Observatory. These data span a wavelength range of 70−500 μm with full-width half-maximum angular resolutions of 5.6−36.9′′. The disc is well resolved in all bands, with the ring structure visible at 70 and 160 μm. Radial profiles of the disc surface brightness are produced, and a disc radius of 11′′ (∼85 AU)...

Gifts from Exoplanetary Transits

The discovery of transiting extrasolar planets has enabled us a number of interesting stduies. Transit photometry reveals the radius and the orbital inclination of transiting planets, and thereby we can learn the true mass and the density of respective planets by the combined information of radial velocity measurements. In addition, follow-up observations of transiting planets such as secondary...

Pictoris debris disc with the VLT / NaCo

Imaging debris discs in the L-band (3.8 μm) is difficult a task. Quasi-static speckles from imperfect optics prevail below 1whereas background emission is the dominant noise source beyond that separation and is much larger than at shorter wavelengths . We demonstrate here the potential of the newly commissioned AGPM coronograph on VLT/NaCo combined with advanced star and sky subtraction techniq...

A near-infrared interferometric survey of debris-disc stars

Context. Dust is expected to be ubiquitous in extrasolar planetary systems owing to the dynamical activity of minor bodies. Inner dust populations are, however, still poorly known because of the high contrast and small angular separation with respect to their host star, and yet, a proper characterisation of exozodiacal dust is mandatory for the design of future Earth-like planet imaging mission...
